Competition challenges college students
to move on up with business ideas
So you are a college student with an idea for a new business and you need someone to help fund it. Can you make your pitch in a three-minute elevator ride with a venture capitalist?
That is the challenge of Moving On Up, a business concept competition hosted by Launch at the University of Michigan-Flint. The competition gives student entrepreneurs an opportunity to use short videos to present their ideas to real world investors, business people and the local community.
The elevator pitch competition is open to all Genesee County college students, including those at UM-Flint, Kettering University, Mott Community College and Baker College. Flint-area students going to school out-of-town are also welcome to participate. Cash prizes and support from the local business community will be awarded to the best pitches.
Joel Rash, manager of Launch, said, “What would you say if you happened to get into an elevator with someone who could fund your idea? The intent is to nurture an entrepreneurial culture in Flint, and to support students who are exploring how to thrive in Genesee County during and after completion their degree.”
University faculty and staff will help mentor, coach and judge students who are developing business ideas or already running their own start-up. Students wishing to participate can go to http://www.youtube.com/universityoutreach to watch an informational video about the contest and may contact Joel Rash at (810) 424-5454 or thelaunchpad@umflint.edu. The event will begin on September 14 and submissions will be accepted until October 2.
Moving On Up is funded by C. S. Mott Foundation, Michigan Initiative for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIIE) and Michigan University Commercialization Initiative (MUCI), and managed by Launch, which is part of University Outreach at the UM-Flint.
Launch focuses on entrepreneurship, the new economy and small business support to promote a more vibrant local community. Core programs include a student business hatchery, downtown microlending program, and economic development and entrepreneurial internships.
To learn more about Moving On Up and other Launch
programs, go to http://www.umflint.edu/launch or contact Joel Rash at (810)

Subject: Fall Job Fair Coming Soon! Help Us!
The Academic Advising and Career Center is preparing for our Fall Job Fair. A few things have changed.
1. We have combined the business & health fair this year in lieu of the economy.
2. The location will be the Recreation Center.
3. The date is September 23rd - Wed. From 1 to 5.
We are looking for the Student Nursing Association and Alpha Beta Psi to help escort employers to their tables, manage the employer room (which will be on the 2nd floor of the recreation center) where they will be eating lunch, check-in employers, help employers set-up, event set-up and event-clean-up etc...
We will be asking all helpers to arrive at the recreation center for set-up no later than 10 AM.
Your organizations will receive $100 for every 12 volunteer hours that your team contributes (not to exceed $300 or 39 Volunteer hours). Your team members can check in with me to log their hours.
This is a great opportunity to meet some valuable employers - currently we have 43 employers registered. You can check them out in your career connection account. Please call me to confirm your assistance 810 762 3085. Thanks in advance for your help!
